We rely on electricity for almost everything — charging our phones, keeping the lights on, running the fridge, cooking dinner, in both residential and commercial settings. It also keeps medical equipment, street lighting and other life-critical systems running. Because it’s so woven into everyday life, it’s easy to forget just how dangerous electricity can be when something goes wrong — and how fast a small fault can turn into something serious.
A flickering light. A burning smell. A meter box that’s humming or buzzing. These aren’t things to keep an eye on and deal with later — they’re warning signs. Left unchecked, electrical faults can cause fires, shocks, or a total loss of power to your home or business, sometimes within minutes. Knowing the signs of an electrical emergency — and knowing exactly who to call — can protect your property, and the people in it.

Electrical Circuit Overload
Electrical circuits are designed to handle a specific amount of electricity. When they draw more than that amount, it can result in an overload. As we mentioned, your home or business will have a meter or breaker that divides the electricity provided into circuits or fuses.
Each circuit will power a limited number of lights, appliances and other electrical items. If you attempt to power too many at once, you can overload it. In most cases, the breaker will simply “trip”, cutting off electrical supply to that area. Otherwise you might notice:

Plugs with a scorched or blackened appearance

Lack of sufficient power to appliances
As a result of a tripped breaker, you can unplug some devices and attempt to replace the fuse. If you notice burning or scorching of any kind, it’s a good idea to call a professional and get advice on what to do next.
Power Failures & Blackouts
A power outage is a sudden loss of electricity to an area — anywhere from a single home to an entire town. They’re usually caused by storms, network faults, or scheduled utility work, and in larger events, an issue at a power station or along transmission lines can knock out supply to thousands of homes and businesses at once.
Most blackouts are an inconvenience rather than a danger — but they can still catch you off guard. Keep a torch or battery-powered light within easy reach rather than candles, especially if there’s any chance the outage is linked to a fault on the property rather than the network. If you rely on medical equipment, refrigerated medication, or run a business that can’t afford downtime, having a backup power plan in place before an outage hits — not after — makes all the difference.
If the power doesn’t return within a reasonable time, or something about it doesn’t add up — sparking, burning smells, or an outage isolated to just your property while your neighbours still have power — that’s often a sign of a fault on your side of the meter, not the network. That’s when it’s time to call an emergency electrician, not wait it out.
Fallen Power Lines
Fallen power lines are the exception to “not necessarily dangerous.” When a power line comes down while still live, it’s an immediate danger to anyone and anything nearby — people, pets, vehicles, even the ground itself. Storms, car accidents and falling trees are the most common causes, and on the South Coast, all three happen more often than most people expect.
Never assume a downed line is safe just because it looks dead. Electricity doesn’t announce itself — a line that appears harmless can still be live, and the ground around it can be energised too. Stay well back from the line and from anything touching it — a fence, a car, a puddle — and keep others, including pets, away as well.
If you see a fallen power line, don’t approach it and don’t try to move it yourself. Electrical Fires
Faulty outlets or appliances, bad wiring and circuit breaker issues can cause electrical fires. In these cases, the electricity that is supposed to be contained in the wires is exposed to the surrounding areas, generating heat that can ignite insulation, drywall and wood.
Unlike traditional fires, you cannot use water on an electrical fire, as you might end up being electrocuted. Instead, use a fire extinguisher and immediately call the fire department. Electrical fires often start within walls and can spread quickly while remaining largely out of sight.
Meter Box Issues (Humming or Buzzing)
Meter boxes are where your power supply is separated into the various parts of your home. This includes lighting, wall sockets and appliances in different rooms or “circuits” of the house. Each circuit has its own breaker, which can be blown or tripped in the event of an overload.
Under normal circumstances, these boxes do not make any noise. However, certain issues can cause a buzzing sound or hum. These issues are usually not dangerous, but you don’t necessarily want to go poking around in there. Instead, it’s best to call a professional and have them take a look. Electric Shock
As we mentioned above, electrical shocks can range from minor injuries to potentially life threatening medical emergencies. They can be caused by downed power lines, frayed cords, bad extension leads and electrical appliances being introduced to water.
The person who receives the shock might be knocked unconscious, have breathing difficulties or suffer burns on their body. In these cases, we need to take swift action and contact emergency services as quickly as possible. That said, even if the shock does not appear to be severe, it is always a good idea to seek medical attention.
Preparing for Emergencies
Every home and business owner has an obligation to be prepared in the event of an emergency, electrical or otherwise. This means having a sufficient number of fire extinguishers on hand and ensuring that those extinguishers are well-maintained and up to date. They should also post emergency contact numbers and emergency escape routes in prominent places.
